Last week we talked about reinventing your career and what I found out from some of my offline feedback is that many people know what they don’t want to do, they know they want to make a change, but are really paralyzed when it comes to making that choice.  It is a big deal.  It is hard to change gears and do something new, particularly if you are still paying off the loans from the education required for your first career choice.  Or if you have been doing the same thing for years and it is how everyone you know identifies you.  The pressures from family, friends and our own expectations can be overwhelming and frequently will keep us tied to a job that is no longer satisfying.

If you find yourself in this place, then just move ahead slowly.  Do not make any sudden or rash decisions in the heat of the moment.   In the majority of cases you can prepare for whatever you are changing to while still working for your current employer.  It gives you a built- in safety net.  You may have to put in a lot more hours, but hours spent reinventing yourself and building your dream don’t really feel a whole lot like work.
